The opera tells the story of Paul, a grief-stricken widower who is obsessed with preserving the memory of his deceased wife. Set in the fictional city of Bruges, Paul’s emotional journey becomes entwined with a young dancer named Marietta, who bears a striking resemblance to his late wife. As Paul’s obsession intensifies, reality and fantasy blur, creating a haunting and psychological atmosphere throughout the opera. Korngold’s lush and romantic score combines influences from late Romanticism and the emerging sounds of the 20th century, showcasing his remarkable talent for blending traditional orchestration with modern harmonies.

Staged by Vasily Barkhatov and Zinoviy Margolin, the opera will be performed under the baton of Ilya Norshtein. Mokhail Gubsky will star as Paul.
